Fandom Theory - Henry Jenkins

Fandom Theory - Henry Jenkins A fandom is a collection of people who form communities based on their love for media texts  such as movies, books, music and etc .  A fandom is different with regular fans, as the shows that they like would define their personality either on a physical form like through clothing or mentally through action or behavior. Some fandoms might even make their own media texts based on their favorite shows, this is usually called fan fictions and people who create them are called PROSUMERS. Fandoms Summarized:  Semiotic Productivity: Fans understand the meanings behind the media text.  Enunciative Productivity: 'fanspeak' Fans sharing  the product to other people, styling the same way as the characters. Textual Productivity: Prosumers ( fan who makes their own media texts ) content like Fan Fiction. Disney Fanfics in Wattpad Stages of Production in a Media Text` Production - When ideas are made, put into practice and shot. This where filmin...

Where the news would constantly talk about it, Movies or films would be made based on it and Everyone would be discussing it.  4. Disproportionally:  Often wise, the event would be exaggerated by the media, Making the audience feel like it is more serious and dangerous than what it actually is. Post Colonialism + Examples

Post Colonialism  Paul Gilroy Post Colonialism is how history affected media and its representation of specific groups of people. Because of the end of colonialism by World war 2, British or European people in general started to lose their influence. As a result they try to portray themselves in the best light possible within the media but at the same time, portraying 'other' groups as inferior, mysterious and uncivilized. This effects what audience thinks, making them feel as if the Europeans are more powerful and better.  Example Conform: The final? and latest addition for the Iconic spy and secret agent for the British Intelligence Service or M16, James Bond. Semiotics

Ferdinand de Saussure Semiotics  Definition Semiotics is a study of how signs in a media texts is used to convey meaning or present a message to the audience. Like how connotation is the Literal meaning while denotation is the implied meaning, For example the color red has a literal meaning of the color red, while the implied meaning could be blood, romance and etc.  Different signs would always communicate different meaning and depending on the interpreter or the person seeing,  it could be good or bad.  There are three types of Semiotics  1. Levi Strauss 'Binary Opposites'

Levi Strauss ' Binary Opposites ' Binary Opposite Theory  This is a theory suggest that many Media forms such as Movies, Books and TV Shows would always have polar opposites either their characters, goals, background and etc. We see it everyday in films, such as: Good vs Evil Weak vs Strong Rich vs Poor Young vs Ol d These opposites are often used to create conflict and makes the story feel more entertaining and exiting. But on top of that, its used more importantly as a way to communicate meaning. In each example of the opposites, One side would always win, and what side does win might relate to the meaning of what the director is trying to give. Case Study Darkest Hours A Little Backstory Germany had Blitzkrieg their way through France and now the combined British and French armies in Belgium numbering above 300,000 men are besieged in the area near Dunkirk. The Germans are closing in and their only escape is sea. Winston Churchill became the newly appointed Prime Minister...

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory  He Explains that in every story, in the beginning, there is always an  equilibrium , A State of balance , The status quo so to speak. Everyone is living their day to day lives. While its not perfect or sometimes even good, it is still the lives that they lived.  But as time passes on,  a  disruption  appears ,  a sudden change the regular day to day routine. And in a story this is where the conflict would begin, a problem that the characters would need to solve. But before that the  acknowledgement of the disruption  would come, This where the Characters or the Character would find out about the problem and begin the prosses of fixing it.  This brings us to the Resolution phase, where the problem had been solved. And now instead of the previous equilibrium. We now have a New Equilibrium, a new state of balance that could better than before or even worse, the important part, is there had been a change to...

Narrative Theory

Narrative Theory What is a Narrative? A Narrative describes on how a story is being told by a person like a Director would in their films. Unlike a plot who describes what the story is , like Harry Potter realizing he's a wizard or Luke Skywalker destroying the 1st Death Star. A Narrative combines the various  elements within the film like setting character or plot and tells that story in way for it to signify the most meaning towards audience.  A Story can be Narrated in various ways, either using first person or third person,  A sequence of a story might not always stay in line as well, Sometimes a stories would have  fragmented  sequences ( where the plot jumps back or forwards in the past or in the future ). And all the methods have their own specific uses and meaning which goes back to what the story makers want to have the audience to receive. A Typical storyline would look something like this : Beginning  ------ Middle ------ Ending
