Todorov's Narrative Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory

He Explains that in every story, in the beginning, there is always an equilibrium, A State of balance , The status quo so to speak. Everyone is living their day to day lives. While its not perfect or sometimes even good, it is still the lives that they lived.

But as time passes on,  a disruption appearsa sudden change the regular day to day routine. And in a story this is where the conflict would begin, a problem that the characters would need to solve. But before that the acknowledgement of the disruption would come, This where the Characters or the Character would find out about the problem and begin the prosses of fixing it.

This brings us to the Resolution phase, where the problem had been solved. And now instead of the previous equilibrium. We now have a New Equilibrium, a new state of balance that could better than before or even worse, the important part, is there had been a change to your day to day life.

In order it looks like:

Equilibrium - Disruption - Recognition of Disruption - Attempt to Repair - New Equilibrium.

Case Study

*Spoilers for Thor Love & Thunder*

Thor along the Guardians of the Galaxy continue their quest by helping in Galaxy who are in need. Not everything was perfect, but it was His Equilibrium. Thor still had his feelings in the past  The producers is likely showing us, that even for all powerful God, much like a human would, He still has trouble moving on.

Thor only found after His latest mission, that numerous Gods that had been killed on various planets across the Galaxy. It is quite rare for Gods to be killed and it caused quite a disruption. Thor received another distress signal from one of His friends saying that there was a man killing Gods wherever He goes, She asked Thor for His assistance. Thor Recognizing the dangers immediately  went away to save His friends and soon His people. In The movie, Thor did not hesitate to help His friends despite dangers that He had saw. His act of bravery and loyalty to His friends as probably something the the producers would like to promote to its audience.

Thor tried to stop the God Slayer in various ways, by asking the help from other Gods and accidentally pissing them off, and by actually fighting Him directly. He was defeated, but the God slayer wasted His wish so his child could come back to life. Some Gods died, and some people closest to Thor also died. It wasn't a perfect fix, but it was an attempt of repair. The Gods were spared and Universe probably saved.

Thor now lives his life with a His new adopted Daughter? Niece? Child? Still fighting aliens and saving the Galaxy and also hunted by Zeus. But now His new equilibrium with his daughter does seem to make him more happy and maybe he had truly moved on.

This movie talks a lot about Gods/ Goddesses which we as humans view as all powerful, all knowing and holly. But the way the the Film depicts Gods is as corrupt, selfish, arrogant and cruel beings that don't even care to the to their own subjects. Maybe the producers are making a reference to powerful leaders in our world who rule our world like Gods, depicting them as the way they did in the film or maybe their referencing people in powerful positions, who have many followers yet they only seem to care for themselves.

Narrative Theory

Narrative Theory What is a Narrative? A Narrative describes on how a story is being told by a person like a Director would in their films. Unlike a plot who describes what the story is , like Harry Potter realizing he's a wizard or Luke Skywalker destroying the 1st Death Star. A Narrative combines the various  elements within the film like setting character or plot and tells that story in way for it to signify the most meaning towards audience.  A Story can be Narrated in various ways, either using first person or third person,  A sequence of a story might not always stay in line as well, Sometimes a stories would have  fragmented  sequences ( where the plot jumps back or forwards in the past or in the future ). And all the methods have their own specific uses and meaning which goes back to what the story makers want to have the audience to receive. A Typical storyline would look something like this : Beginning  ------ Middle ------ Ending

Post Modernism Case Studies

Analyze the key characteristics of postmodern media? Jean Baudrillard stated that post modernist texts is a copy of a copy in where there is reality, Heightened reality and hyper reality, with each one being more surreal than the other. A Documentary like 'Hailstorm' ( 2022 ) available on Netflix is an example of heightened reality as it includes aspects that are real such as natural environment, sounds and real life locations but at the same time includes artificial editing that creates different meaning in the form of music, narration and camera angles. While audiences would still be able to tell the difference on what's real or not. Their perception of the film changes depending on what the Producers show. The cooking show 'Hell's Kitchen' ( 2023 ) is a TV Series that haves chefs battle each other in a cooking contest. This series in considered as a Hyper Reality as audiences would struggle to grasp on what exactly is real in the film and what isn't. This
