Storyboard - Timeline & Ideas

Week 1

Introduction & First Idea

Mr Nick first introduced us about the Project of making an advert, I originally thought that I had to make the plan + the video of the ad itself, which would probably be pretty challenging. But it turned out that we were only needed to make the storyboard.

At home, I came up with a few ideas for the advert. My first and initial one was advertising Business Clothes. I had the idea of Having a man wearing that in a informal occasion, the motto would be 'Classy in all Scenario's'. But I scrapped the idea, because I had trouble finding out an advert scenario that could be interesting but different for a Business suit.

I continued my search for a product that could be interesting. I thought food could be it, but I still liked my Business suit idea more. So after so time and Research, I finally got the idea of still using the business suit but instead of advertising that, I would focus on the shoes they're wearing. Of course I cant just use a typical business shoe product as it would be far too boring and normal. I needed something that is different but still cool. Vans was my Final choice, as I feel like it didn't fit with your typical Business man stereotype. A Business man using a Vans shoes somewhat subverts the audience's expectations.

Some References

The shoes is clearly used
The Shoe in the advert should be like that
To further subvert the audience's expectations

It feels odd seeing a Business man
With a skateboard and Vans shoes

Week 2

Add Storyboard plan / Idea

I've mentioned the advert idea to Mr Nick, Which is Vans. But unfortunately I haven't really thought of any detailed ideas of how to advertise that product in an interesting way . He told me to research about it and include further details. But I was also starting to consider changing my product entirely, as most of my other classmates are doing shoes as well, and most of our adverts did not pass Mr Nick's judgment.

The Plan

A few days after, I did some research and Finally came out with a decent plan.

My ad would go something like this:

The Main Character is a business person, suit, tie lives in a comfortable place has a car and etc. He was preparing for work, when he Spots himself a pair of Vans whom He had wore a couple of years prior during his teen years. I'll show this by having a flashback of him playing a skateboard during that time. After a bit, he would comeback from reality, look at His car and then skateboard, Soon he chooses to use the Vans and with the skateboard he runs of from the house with his business attire on. He does all kinds of things in His journey ( Haven't thought of it ), until he somehow climbs up a skyscraper and parkour jumps into His own office, where He comes into a meeting. And that's it.

Moto : ' Start the day with an Adventure '

Some Inspiration or References:
This video was probably my main inspiration

After some thought, I figured the things he would do during His journey would likely be Him, riding confidently on the sidewalks while doing some cool tricks. Ill probably show him reach the skyscraper by showing a parkour sequence, Much like in Hawaii 5.0 Season 7 during the chase scene. By the end of it I'll like it if he Jumps like this:

Week 3

The Revision

I told my new idea to Mr Nick, It was worked and I got a pass, But He said I don't need to add the City and Skyscrapers sequence, As it would be too much. So the advert would end when the Person is shown using a Skateboard into the horizon in a bright sunny day.

Something like this, but with houses on the side
and the person using a skateboard.

I also had the idea of having the camera move up with the Motto ' Begin the day with an Adventure ' In a red format and following the typical Vans typeface and It would end with a fade out transition. In addition I had to find a way to show the audience that the Main Character has a history with Vans and Skateboarding by not actually showing it, like with a flashback. I decided that using frames, pictures and stickers relating to skateboarding and Vans can connotate the implied meaning.

Things like this

Storyboard 1st Draft

With the help of the storyboard we made in class with Mr Nick of Money Supermarket , I finally started making the first storyboard draft. It was difficult at first, as I wasn't really used to the design or the correct way to do it. But after seeing some more references like 'How to make a Storyboard' by the Media Insider, I got used to it eventually and in 4 - 5 days, I completed the storyboard. It wasn't extremely detailed, but it had enough information to have someone understand the plot.

At the end of the week, I showed the Storyboard to Mr Nick and I got a pass to continue to the Final one. There was a few things that I had to change, like trying to add more color to emphasize movements and actions, as well as cutting a few of my scenes.

The Original Draft

The Fixed Version

Sounds

I only started thinking about the sound in the third week, But I think I found some good choices

Main Background song - It will be played from the beginning from 0.00 - 1.19 Where after the that the music would fade out along with the advert itself. In the actual advert, some alterations might be made to fully integrate it into the add, like lowering down the pitch in specific scenes and etc. This song is perfect for this ad because, its a chill vibe with nothing too over the top, which fits the setting but it still has the cool beats to match a skateboarder. The Lyrics of ' I can't let go ' Also fits in perfectly with plot of someone remembering His past.

Outside Ambience - The Diegetic sounds that you would expect from a morning. A few of them would be chosen like Birds chirping, cars, walking and etc.

Some more Diegetic would be, Footsteps, Door Closing or Opening, Wind and Skateboarding sounds. Although most cannot be heard to clearly as they are mixed in behind the Main Background music.

Week 4

I started to learn how to make the essays like what sort of questions I need to answer, I Haven't started it yet but I will finish it by the end of this week.

I am mostly focusing on the Final Storyboard which is also due this week and by the time of this writing I'm halfway finished with it.

Post Modernism Case Studies

Analyze the key characteristics of postmodern media? Jean Baudrillard stated that post modernist texts is a copy of a copy in where there is reality, Heightened reality and hyper reality, with each one being more surreal than the other. A Documentary like 'Hailstorm' ( 2022 ) available on Netflix is an example of heightened reality as it includes aspects that are real such as natural environment, sounds and real life locations but at the same time includes artificial editing that creates different meaning in the form of music, narration and camera angles. While audiences would still be able to tell the difference on what's real or not. Their perception of the film changes depending on what the Producers show. The cooking show 'Hell's Kitchen' ( 2023 ) is a TV Series that haves chefs battle each other in a cooking contest. This series in considered as a Hyper Reality as audiences would struggle to grasp on what exactly is real in the film and what isn't. This...
