Thumbnail & Logo, Research & Development

Logo and Thumbnail Research Post

*The Research was made by Jonathan, I continued further with along with the development and the Final Product *

Research

The podcast LSD discusses mainly topics that are currently "hot" or relevant in pop culture and the music scene more specifically, my idea was at first to make our logo and font conform to those of other music podcast, an exemplar one being Dissect on Spotify.

But our survey showed that people did not want a serious tone for our podcast that we decided to name LSD, since we now are forced to conform to a new genre namely to that of a more comedic nature we decided to pull inspiration from other podcasts.

The name LSD being an abbreviation for Lyrics, Sound , Decibels allowed for a logo that resembled that of Ryan Higa's Off the pill, which is mostly comedy.

Our color scheme should not fit that of Spotify interface which is mainly black, in fact Jonathan's choice to make the LSD logo include cold colors (sky blue & tangerine for example) was due to the fact that viewers who scroll through Spotify are more likely to be appealed by logos whose colors stick out like a sore thumb. The logo should not be too complicated, easy enough for a little child to draw from memory.

The format should be similar to the rolling stone logo, where there are 3 main colors, in our podcast instead of the warm colors like Rolling stones we will use Cold colors, we just have to figure out how to fit the LSD pill logo that we based of Off the Pill's logo.

A second draft of the logo was made after i was reminded of a logo by the French youtube channel Konbini that was dedicated to exploring the rap scene in Francophone countries though they do expand to other topics outside of rap as long as it is related to music.

Their logo's color scheme and abstract form i predict could attract viewers on Spotify especially since our audience is so young thus might prefer such logos to more serious looking ones.

This format is most likely to be used for our instagram account.

After some processing and having trouble due to my poor drawing skills, our teacher Mr Nick suggested a tie dye shirt color backdrop for the thumbnail since I mentioned the research what people on LSD see which could influence the thumbnail
Something like this:

We could do something like this:

Angelo added that our logos might look like this where we feature equipment used for podcasts such as a mixer or a mic , we decided that we did not want too much text or any at all in the Thumbnail.

Development

Since our aim is to make a thumbnail that is both simple and appealing, We can't add too many stuff since it would overcrowd the space. But at the same Just a simple Backdrop with text can't be enough. So our choice is to use the Tie Dye concept as the Background with the League Gothic Font as the only text in the Thumbnail. Simple but interesting we think. Canva would be the software we use as it's easy to use.

Mock #1

The very first mock up I made, The circles came out
quite okay. But the font felt off.
The Font is better and I also tilted the text a bit
to make it more interesting.
Added White dots at the background to add more variety into the
Logo.
In addition to the stars I added, a few more things
Like the shadow behind the 'LSD'. There's also two pills
and a microphone at the bottom to signify what
Our purpose and title means.

The Full 1920x 1080 Size

Mock #2

The Black Style might not be too interesting for people, So I changed the whole style up now into White / colorful.

The Black Background was completely deleted and replaced with a Tie Dye, creating this colorful spiral that feels like your using LSD *supposedly*. This is reinforced with the white styles of the circles, font and extras like the Microphone. I kept the white dots in the background as it keeps the background from being plain and I made a few of the Circles somewhat transparent.  Its very different with the Black Version and personally I feel like it matches more with our podcast.

I also made one but instead of White, the Logo
uses a Black tone. Personally I feel like it's off so I
Prefer the previous white version.

Final Logo Result:

Advert Analysis #2

Vessi Commercial - Waterproof shoes This is a Vessi commercial that advertises waterproof shoes, it was released in the 19th of October 2021. Vessi prides themselves to have one of the first waterproof shoes, that is also lightweight, easy to use and versatile  in any situation.  Media Language The overall tone of the advertisement is pretty upbeat. The melodic beats and the colorful lighting help setup the happy mood. There is a few media connotations within the text, such as how they described the shoes as being lightweight then showed it sitting on top of a cloud, which is lightweight ( gasses ). The fun and happy atmosphere, helps attract the viewers into a feeling of relaxation, which I think is more appealing to the target audience which are teens and young adults between the ages of 15 - 40.  Representation One stereotype that I can observe is that when the kid with the ice cram says "What about me?"  which clearly references that she's a kid that makes...
